More than the Summer of its Parts

We in the Western Hemisphere are enjoying the longest day of the year. Sun. Light. Heat. Summer. What could be better?
As I type this I am sitting at my desk pulling bits of cold fruit from a glass jar with my fingers. Peaches, pineapple, pear and mango. Maybe even a cherry or two. Makes my feel like an old timey time man in overhauls sitting on a covered porch on a hot day. In reality I'm sitting in an air-conditioned office full of computers and electronics. Ah, modern life.
I picked the first harvest from the garden yesterday. A few yellow squash, some short, fat zucchini and two big cucumbers. I'll probably make a tomato and cuke salad and some sautéed squash with butter and thyme for dinner. My favorite thing in the garden is peas. We never have enough at any one time for a meal but I love just eating them right off the vine. They're always so moist and sweet inside the pod. Best things about summer. At least until we harvest corn.

Here's to You, Mrs. Robinson

I was really saddened to learn that Anne Bancroft died yesterday. She was always one of my favorite actresses. Perhaps my favorite Anne Bancroft movie is the little-known 84 Charing Cross Road with Anthony Hopkins. It's sort of a long distance Platonic love affair through books and letters between two people who never meet.
Check it out if you haven't seen it.
